Ghaath is a very unique Marathi film, right from the subject to the screenplay to storytelling. The story itself is the hero of the film! It’s a proud moment for us all that the film was selected to premiere at the 73rd annual Berlin International Film Festival in 2023, one of the three major film festivals in the world.
This film is an unsparing psychological thriller that portrays the civil war that has been raging in central India for over 50 years between the Indian central government and the Naxalites, Maoist guerrillas who control whole swathes of land, began over fifty years ago and has since taken on a life of its own in remote jungle regions. Everyday life for those who are fighting and also for the local population is marked by violence and the constant proximity to death.

The barber’s chair is often a place where we can be vulnerable. After all, we are trusting someone else to shape our appearance to the world and hoping we like it at the end.

An independent film which is an adaptation of Umakanta Mahapatra’s “Joseph”, is a story of finding purpose even when forsaken.
Father O’Hara, a medical missionary, takes care of Josef, an orphan, with the help of his caretaker, Maularam. Through each character’s struggles – with alcoholism, encroaching modernity, and helplessness – this film explores timeless themes of loneliness, life’s purpose, and a search for grace.
Directed by National Award winner Susant Misra and starring National Award winner and BAFTA nominee Victor Banerjee and Subrat Dutta (Best Actor, Cairo International Film Festival) Josef – Born in Grace has won awards at film festivals around the world.

We have attended many film festivals, both as filmmakers presenting a film, and as audience members/cinephiles, and have been thinking a lot about their role

UAKC has been live-streaming interviews on Facebook. The first one with Subrat Dutta was done to promote Josef – Born in Grace being screened by ICAF. We had a blast doing it, and so we continued, assisted by ICAF, and we’ve been speaking with indie filmmakers about their journeys. The experience has been…eye opening. Not just from everything we are learning from these immensely talented artists but also the challenges we have face. We’ve done almost four so far and we’ve battled technical issues each time. (Almost four because the last one didn’t work out and then calenders haven’t matched)

At the start of the month, we posted that we would be attending Marché du Film virtually. Now that Marché is done, it’s a good

A film market is a great place to learn about the industry and meet other people who are doing the same things that we are. For all the times the journey can seem disheartening, a festival and a market are always places where you can get excited about what you’re doing. Everyone there is excited about creating and telling stories. And there are so many different stories to be told!
We want to continue making movies, so it’s important to create and renew relationships when we attend these events. Not just for the projects that we’ve made, but also those we want to make in the future. It’s important to find collaborators who have similar goals so that we can make the kind of films that we want to make.
Fingers crossed. And if you’re attending the Marche too, get in touch! We’d love to meet you.

When I wrote about how Victor Banerjee (IMDB) joined our production of “Josef – Born in Grace”, I talked about the leaps of faith many people took in order to bring this film to life. Before Victorda joined us, I first had to get our director to take a leap of faith.

I had wanted to adapt my father’s short story “Joseph” into a movie for many years. In 2018, things started to fall into place. We had a director in Lulu (Susant Misra – IMDB), and a script was starting take shape. We had to start getting the crew in place.
As regards the selection of the cast, I cannot help but recollect as to how Victor Banerjee (IMDB) came to be associated with the film.
